Boyd Allen, PG

I went to Colby College where I majored in Geology, because I loved climbing and wanted to learn more about glaciers and mountains. After working as a newspaper photographer and teaching school for six years, I went back to graduate school at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) where I was the first Geochemistry grad student in what evolved into the Glacier Research Group. My wife, high school-aged daughter, and I make our home in Exeter, New Hampshire, where we have easy access to the Great Bay and the Seacoast.

What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy the out of doors, particularly backcountry skiing and kayaking. I have been fortunate enough to combine that with a love of travel that has taken me on climbing and skiing trips through the Cascades, Rockies, Chugach and the Himalayas. I also listen to all sorts of music and collect soundtracks and old surf recordings.

What are some things that most people wouldn’t know about you?
I have a couple of first accents on some New Hampshire ice routes, travelled to all 50 states, and walked in places in Antarctica where no one else has.

Why did you choose Nobis?
I interacted with Nobis for ten years under the DOD mentor/protégé program, when I worked at Foster Wheeler. I admired Nobis’ corporate culture and social conscience. It was a fine group of people to be with, and I wanted to become part of the team.

What are you working on right now?
Right now I’m working on several EPA Superfund sites, each in different stages of the remediation process ranging from investigation through design and into construction. That provides a lot of variety as well as satisfaction in knowing we are doing something positive to clean up the environment.
