Judiciary Center
Salem, MA
Nobis provided geotechnical engineering services for the proposed J. Michael Ruane Judiciary Center under a Master Services Agreement. This project includes the relocation of an existing church to a different location at the site, and construction of a 5-story and 100-foot tall court building with 11 court rooms. Included in the project is the need to re-align the North Street ramps to Bridge Street, which will be performed by the Massachusetts Highway Department. Construction cost is $106 Million.
Nobis performed a preliminary geotechnical subsurface exploration to assist DCAM in evaluating possible locations for the proposed Judiciary Center. Nobis’ scope of services included coordinating and observing eight test borings to up to 57 feet deep and installing three monitoring wells. Nobis performed an additional geotechnical subsurface exploration program consisting of 16 soil borings up to 110 feet deep and installed four additional monitoring wells. Because the site is underlain by soft marine clay up to 50 feet thick, multiple undisturbed soil samples were collected with Shelby tubes that were submitted to a soil laboratory to analyze the compressibility characteristics. Nobis also provided foundation support system recommendations including a detailed cost analysis to determine the most economical deep foundation option.
