GEOTECHNICAL SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
The Spaulding Youth Center, located on 600+ acres in Northfield, New Hampshire, provides educational, residential, and therapeutic care to children and youth with autism, neurological, and/or behavioral challenges. The campus is comprised of 14 residence and educational buildings. Nobis joined the team of professionals and a construction manager working with Spaulding Youth Center to construct a new 20,000 SF high-performing school. Nobis provided civil, geotechnical, landscape design and permitting services, as well as construction support.
Nobis worked closely with the architect and construction manager during the design phase to optimize site layout and minimize construction costs. The building was sited to take advantage of solar gain, to minimize disturbance of wetlands, and to work with the topography to reduce importing fill. The low impact design included decentralizing drainage, constructing small parking areas strategically located around the campus, and infiltrating storm water using rain gardens and bioretention swales. The storm water design was prepared in accordance with New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Alteration of Terrain (AOT) and Town of Northfield requirements.
Nobis performed a geotechnical evaluation of the site subsurface conditions pertinent to design and construction of foundations and pavements. We also designed an on-site septic system and assisted with obtaining local, State, and Federal construction permits. Nobis provided enhanced construction observation services during construction.
